People often ask which is better. They do different jobs, so the better question is what you're trying to prevent.
Coatings make cleaning easier
A coating adds a hard, slick layer. Dirt lets go more easily and washing is quicker. It offers little resistance to a stone travelling at motorway speed.
Film stops physical damage
Film is thick enough to absorb stone chips. It costs more, and it usually covers only the panels most at risk.
When to use both
A common setup is film on the front of the car and a coating over everything. If you mostly drive in town, a coating alone may be plenty.
